My Equipment

Veronica has been on the NIV (non-invasive ventilation) protocol since she was diagnosed at 5 months old. She uses the Emerson cough assist machine 3 times a day when healthy and more often if she is sick. She requires suctioning on a regular basis with a DeVilbiss suction machine. She uses a pulse oximeter (TruSat by Ohmeda - I would not recommend that one) when she is asleep, ill, or needing spot checks throughout the day. Veronica has used a bipap machine since she was 6 months old. She did not take real well to it in the beginning but now can't sleep without it and even will ask for it when she feels she needs some breathing assistance. She uses the new AVAPS by Respironics and has a ResMed VPAP 3 as a back up. The bipap masks she uses are the Respironics Comfort Gel, Respironics Simplicity and SNAPP nasal prongs.

Veronica got her g tube and had nissen surgery when she was 6 months old. She could still eat orally until she was 9 months old but it was important for us to be proactive and be ready when the time came that she lost her swallow. She did not lose anything nutrition wise this way when she did lose her swallow and it provided a means to administer medication when needed. She uses the Zevex Infinity feeding pump and is fed continuously throughout the day and night, except while doing therapies and other activities. When on bipap she is vented to allow air to escape from her tummy. We use a Rialco flood alarm to warn us in the event that her food gets backed up while she is vented.

Veronica tried out her first power chair when she was 18 months old.

She has a Permobil Koala that we call "Little Red Ride". She controls it with a mini proportional joystick.

Veronica's first manual chair was a KidCart.

Veronica's new manual wheelchair is a Max EasyS. It allows her to lie flat if need be and can carry a great deal of equipment underneath. She has a high/low base that the seat can go on so she can more easily participate in things like school activities.

Veronica uses her stander twice a day for at least 40 minutes at a 70-75 degree angle. It is a Buffalo stander by R82/Snug Seat.

Her flamingo potty/shower chair is also made by R82/Snug Seat.

Veronica loves to swim and uses a Danmar head float while in the water.

When younger she used an infant life jacket with a noodle behind her neck for support.

Swinging is one of Veronica's favorite activities. She has a Jenn Swing...

and a platform swing!

Keeping Veronica strong and healthy entails a lot of physical therapy. She works out on the peanut ball several times a week

Using slings helps develop upper body strength and promote independence.

Veronica's mom made skates to exercise her arms

and her legs.
